threads of memories

China 2005, originally uploaded by pilgrimgirl.

This picture was taken while I was on my trip in China in 2005. I came across it today as I was working through old picture files (gah, no more hard drive space left on my computer and I’m having to delete old & unnecessary pics).

We were in a restaurant and an entertainer gave us each a piece of red yarn to tie around our wrists for good luck. Pictured here is my hand, Dora’s hand, and my Mom’s.

I’d totally forgotten about the red yarn until now…Perhaps the threads brought us a bit of luck later as we traveled in dueling taxis across town to reach a night market and we all made it in one piece (despite our driver having driven down the sidewalk part of the way).

I wore the yarn on my wrist until it fell off a few weeks later.

“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.”

About Me

About Me

Hi there friend, and welcome to my blog. I started writing on the internet two decades ago. Since then I've started and finished a PhD program, left the Mormon church and became a Quaker, got divorced, remarried, found full-time work in academia, took up rock climbing and outrigger canoeing, and traveled across the globe (China! Belgium! Italy! Chicago! Montana! Portland! Gettysburg! and oh-so-many points in-between). This blog is eclectic and random--it has poetry and cooking and books. And cats. And flowers. And the ocean (my ocean). But in that sense it's a good reflection of me and my wide-ranging, far-reaching, magpie curiosity.
