seeds

Eating some leftover risotto for lunch–made of my favorite rice blend that has small radish seeds mixed in. Such a perfectly satisfying crunch each time I eat a mouthful!

Thinking about the seeds sprouting in my garden and on my back porch right now. And of my newest nephew who was born this morning at 3:59am, just 18 minutes after his parents arrived at the hospital.

I’m amazed by seeds. By their potential to grow into sunflowers and babies and tomatillos. As Thoreau wrote, “Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders.”

my morning

I’m always searching for the perfect morning routine–one that allows me to get much accomplished while still beginning the day with peace. This morning was a very good one. I awoke at 6:15 feeling rested (thanks to turning out the lights at 11pm rather than at midnite), took a lovely warm shower, had ample of time to get myself dressed and groomed, got GameBoy to school on time, came home and checked email, then went to the garden and watered my seedlings (the peas are looking great!) and meditated there in the sunshine for about 15 min. Came home and had about 2 hours of very focused study and then headed to campus for two back-to-back meetings with colleagues (and even had a few spare minutes to meet John at the ArtBar coffeeshop in-between). After the meetings I walked home from campus (instead of taking the shuttle) to get in a bit of exercise. All-in-all it was super-productive and invigorating start to the day, which I hope to emulate in a similar fashion each day this week.

On Tuesdays and Thursday I teach from 8-9:30am so the day gets off to an early start, but it never seems as productive as when I start my day with my own agenda. I think I need to work on a routine that will help me to get busy as soon as class is over!

I’m curious, what rituals/routines help you to get a good start each morning?

About Me

About Me

Hi there friend, and welcome to my blog. I started writing on the internet two decades ago. Since then I've started and finished a PhD program, left the Mormon church and became a Quaker, got divorced, remarried, found full-time work in academia, took up rock climbing and outrigger canoeing, and traveled across the globe (China! Belgium! Italy! Chicago! Montana! Portland! Gettysburg! and oh-so-many points in-between). This blog is eclectic and random--it has poetry and cooking and books. And cats. And flowers. And the ocean (my ocean). But in that sense it's a good reflection of me and my wide-ranging, far-reaching, magpie curiosity.
