Photo: image of a purple flower with a bee sitting in the middle of the flower

Today’s photo is of the same flower and same bee as in a photo I posted last week. Which do you like better and why?

After Sara’s post about the emotions in photos, I’ve thought a lot about why some pictures “work” and others don’t. I get a lot of my inspiration from 3191, because their photos are so simple yet incredibly inspiring (they nearly take my breath away every morning—for example, who knew that two apricots on a paper towel could be so lovely?).

I like the pictures too, but I’d rather read about slap-fights or outrageous LDS stuff.

I so agree with that John! It is so much more stimulating…Can we have the pretty pictures to go with the other stuff????

hmmm…..will think about it. haven’t written about my violent tendencies or materialistic mormons or odd temple rituals much lately. Perhaps I should remedy that??

perhaps…as long as I am not included in the materialistic category for being excited at the expensive purse my boss bought me. In my defense it is super cute…

Ok, and stop threatening people already. You can’t hide your violent, war loving side from me! You secretly own assault rifles don’t you?

3191 is amazing, isn’t it?

As for what other people are saying, I like the mix of things here. It’s as I’ve said elsewhere; I like to imagine different spots on the blogosphere as nice little tea gardens where friends and strangers can gather and discuss things, sometimes funny things, sometimes terrible things, but also look at pretty flowers and eat nice cakes. But if you want to change to all slap fights and LDS all the time, hey, it is your blog — and yeah, I’ll still read it. :)

As for your question re the pix, I like this one, but I love the other one. Part of it is my personal obsession with details — the more the merrier! Also, though, this one is more formal, more geometrically centered (I will not say the F word — no, not that F word, the Fi word) and we are looking at the bee from behind and farther away. The other one shows his face as he toils, closer and more intimately, and you can see the hairs on him complementing the petal strands of the bachelor’s button (or whatever it is), his fur mirrored by the fuzziness of the — I don’t know what to call it — the part of the flower between the petals and the sepals.

Now, which one do you like better and why, hm?

Fun, fun, fun. Thank you.

Personally, I like the closeup much better. For all of the reasons that you stated Sara and just because it conveys so much more than just a bee on a flower. What I do like about the one here is the way the flowers in the background give the sense of a huge floral meadow. But I’m all about the close-ups (and darn that bee for turning around just as I took the far away one!)!

About Me

About Me

Hi there friend, and welcome to my blog. I started writing on the internet two decades ago. Since then I've started and finished a PhD program, left the Mormon church and became a Quaker, got divorced, remarried, found full-time work in academia, took up rock climbing and outrigger canoeing, and traveled across the globe (China! Belgium! Italy! Chicago! Montana! Portland! Gettysburg! and oh-so-many points in-between). This blog is eclectic and random--it has poetry and cooking and books. And cats. And flowers. And the ocean (my ocean). But in that sense it's a good reflection of me and my wide-ranging, far-reaching, magpie curiosity.
