voting

written by Jana October 29, 2008

On Monday when I voted, I was ebullient. I Love Voting. Just love it. Although it probably sounds really corny to say this, I felt the spirit of folks like Martin and Alice and Harvey right there alongside me there in that uber hi-tech voting booth. I was also surrounded by dozens of undergrads who were exercising their right for the very first time. The thrill was palpable.

People who are voting next Tuesday: bring a lawnchair and some leftover Halloween candy to share. Those lines are going to be long, but don’t let that deter you. Just do it.

:)

Yeah for early voting by mail! My husband and I did it together for FHE. We lounged on the sofa, read about the ballot measures and researched the little known candidates online.
It was so easy and convenient. We just put our ballots in the mail the next day and now we don’t have to worry about anything on Tuesday!
And, I found out we can get on the list to ALWAYS have our ballots sent by mail. So cool.

I wish we could vote early in PA. I hope you don’t mind but I posted your advice on my facebook page as “Advice to Tuesday voters:…”

I love voting. I’ve voted in every election since I first came of age. I vote in person on Election day because I just love the process. I know that in the future this option will be less available, so while I can I vote early and vote often.

I’m so excited about voting but you’re right-the lines will be long. I could early vote here in FL but those lines look even worse and my regular polling place is within a gated community so I’m hoping it can’t be THAT bad-right!? Either way-I’m voting.
I started a “Rock the Disabled Vote” campaign on Friday just as a way to spread awareness of how few people with disabilities vote. It’s not a “real” event just a way to spread awareness and show support. If you want to check out the post, it’s here: http://www.disaboom.com/Blogs/karaswims/archive/2008/10/31/rock-the-disabled-vote.aspx
Thanks and have a great night:)

My husband and I voted on Friday in Kansas. We had to drive about 40 minutes to the county courthouse to participate in early voting. The town where we voted is very diverse (I know, in Kansas!) and has a huge military base. I cried almost the whole time because: apathy is dead, the turn out was beautifully diverse, many military men and women were voting, getting to have a say, the lines were long but everyone was cheerful and helpful to each other. It was awesome.
Thanks for your blog!

Lulu:
So glad to hear from you and glad to know that you voted (go you!).

I have to just add that I miss reading your blog (it now seems to be only available to pre-selected readers). I loved your unique way of seeing the world–your posts were incredibly inspiring and thought-provoking. :)

About Me

About Me

Hi there friend, and welcome to my blog. I started writing on the internet two decades ago. Since then I've started and finished a PhD program, left the Mormon church and became a Quaker, got divorced, remarried, found full-time work in academia, took up rock climbing and outrigger canoeing, and traveled across the globe (China! Belgium! Italy! Chicago! Montana! Portland! Gettysburg! and oh-so-many points in-between). This blog is eclectic and random--it has poetry and cooking and books. And cats. And flowers. And the ocean (my ocean). But in that sense it's a good reflection of me and my wide-ranging, far-reaching, magpie curiosity.
