Brooke’s post on XBlog about her near brush with death is oh-so-worth reading. Perfect for a Friday afternoon. And read the comments, too. So much wisdom and insight there.

‘sail on silvergirl’ or yes, I have been watching a bit too much youtube lately
“Bridge over Troubled Waters” is one of my all-time favorite songs. I would belt out the lyrics as my Simon & Garfunkel tape whirred in the stereo of my old blue Mustang (yes, I am sure that attracted attention from nearby cars, but one doesn’t care about such things in high school). The pathos of this song moved me like no other.
So the rendition of the S&G classic below is by none other than the King himself. A singer that I didn’t even know existed until the day of his death (I can quite distinctly remember standing in the street in front of my house when the neighbor kids across the street informed that Elvis had died, and then had to explain to me who he was). So I’m not a huge Elvis fan–I’m actually pretty mystified by his cult following. But the man did have an incredible voice. And now, via the magic of the internet, you can all share this ‘tender’ moment in history with me…

because there’s a place where we belong…
Another entry in my series of music videos that will both warm your heart and motivate you to reach out and change this crazy world.
First, Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush singing “Don’t Give Up.” A classic video, perfect for the day when you feel as though your efforts are futile, for those moments when you need an angel (in the form of the delightful Kate) telling you that “there’s a place where you belong.” An important message for those times of despair (and we all have them). When it seems as though life is too big, too hard, and no one really cares:
And now Bono and Alicia Keys make a perfect song even perfect-er, as they kick off Project Red. Watch this video and sing along with me on the refrain, “Don’t give up [Africa]. Because there’s a place where we belong.” And as gift-giving season looms ahead, consider buying from Project Red, Heifer, Seva, or HandReach.

Through violence you may murder a murderer, but you can’t murder murder. Through violence you may murder a liar, but you can’t establish truth. Through violence you may murder a hater, but you can’t murder hate.
Darkness cannot put out darkness. Only light can do that…. Difficult and painful as it is, we must walk on in the days ahead with an audacious faith in the future. When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds of despair, and when our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, working to pull down the gigantic mountains of evil, a power that is able to make a way out of no way and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows. Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.

green sauce envy
Dear Internet:
Is there anywhere that I can buy Del Taco’s green sauce by the bottle?
As it is, I am scraping the change out of the corners of my purse so I can head to DT for lunch. I am considering ordering their world-famous bean & cheese burrito w/green sauce, with just a few minor modifications:“Um, can I get that bean & cheese burrito without the cheese?”
“And can you hold the beans, too?”
“And while you’re at it, just skip the tortilla, ok?”

a rose is a rose

a rose is a rose I
Originally uploaded by pilgrimgirl. As much as I want to deny it–showing my hard-edged academic, goal-oriented, not afraid to get my hands dirty in the garden, self–I am a hopeless romantic.
Like this week when I was at Trader Joes (ostensibly buying milk and bread), these pale pink roses just called out to me. I bought them, put them in a crystal vase and sat them on the table, just admiring them. Just having them there made me feel so good.
Then there’s our bedroom…John and I got this super-lovely canopy bed from a fellow freecycler. I quickly pulled out a piece of pale peach silk from (that I’d received from my friend Carole awhile back), sewed up a coverlet, and put it on the bed. I plumped up the pillows, and smoothed every wrinkle. Beautiful! Recently, John and I also hung some curtains from the canopy–creating our own romantic (and private) space. It’s like waking up at a B&B every morning!
The practical side of me says “roses…they’ll die, what a waste of money.” But the romantic side of me says “Roses…how beautiful…”

revolution
When C was little he often talked about setting New Year’s “revolutions.” At the time it was so cute, yet it always gave me pause. Do we really think that we can change our lives in some dramatic way merely because it is the beginning of a new calendar year?
For the past 3 years or so my only New Year’s resolution has been not to set any resolutions. I’m thinking of breaking the pattern this year and actually setting some goals.
What about you? Do you do resolutions? What do you resolve? Do you ever keep them?
