short shameful confession #16

written by Jana September 16, 2011

In the past year I’ve acquired some pretty rings that I tend to wear on the 4th finger of my right hand or on the third finger of my left hand.  If I wear them to bed, I nearly always wake up with them on the ‘ring’ finger of my left hand.

how is this shameful? You were married for nigh on 20 years….it’s your subconcious memory doing it, not ‘you’. Interestingly, as soon as I took my wedding ring off, I felt lighter. And now I have a ring that isn’t at all like a wedding ring on it.

I guess it’s not really shameful…but it is a bit odd when I don’t figure it out until hours later. I have had more than one person ask me about it–as in, what’s with the ring on *that* finger?

Maybe one more odd thing wrt to my rings–a few years ago I went to counseling to help deal with some of the effects of my marriage on my psyche. My therapist quickly picked up on the fact that whenever I told him about problems I was having with my spouse, I would take my rings off the married finger and slip them over to some other finger. So I think there’s been something happening with that for quite some time.

About Me

About Me

Hi there friend, and welcome to my blog. I started writing on the internet two decades ago. Since then I've started and finished a PhD program, left the Mormon church and became a Quaker, got divorced, remarried, found full-time work in academia, took up rock climbing and outrigger canoeing, and traveled across the globe (China! Belgium! Italy! Chicago! Montana! Portland! Gettysburg! and oh-so-many points in-between). This blog is eclectic and random--it has poetry and cooking and books. And cats. And flowers. And the ocean (my ocean). But in that sense it's a good reflection of me and my wide-ranging, far-reaching, magpie curiosity.
