hot lava?
deep thoughts

hot lava?

written by Jana July 26, 2011

Question:

Is the game of Hot Lava a universal among kids?  I was recently surprised to learn from someone raised in Europe that he knew this game, and everyone I’ve asked about it since seems to have grown up playing some variation of it.

In my family it meant jumping from bed to bed rather than letting your feet touch the carpet, because that was Hot Lava and would melt your feet off.

Did you play Hot Lava?  If so, how, where & when?

We played alligators in the swamp, but then we grew up in Louisiana. Hot Lava is mentioned in the Pippi Longstocking books, for what that’s worth.

Oh, I didn’t remember the Pippi mention–that might explain why kids on both sides of the Atlantic know the game. :)

Gosh, at first I had no idea what you were talking about, but upon seeing the young cat girl in the photo, that took me right back. Yes, I remember playing it either at playgrounds at the park or at recess at school. Indeed, don’t get your feet on the ground, or else they’ll melt. I wonder if my kids know this? I’ve got to ask them.

Yup, absolutely played it. It was easiest in the kitchen, with all those counters. :)

Yes, we played Hot Lava on the playground. Sometimes there was a variation with a lava monster. If the lava monster touched you, or if you touched the ground, you also turned into a hot lava monster. The last one standing won.

ooo, that sounds so fun, Heather!

About Me

About Me

Hi there friend, and welcome to my blog. I started writing on the internet two decades ago. Since then I've started and finished a PhD program, left the Mormon church and became a Quaker, got divorced, remarried, found full-time work in academia, took up rock climbing and outrigger canoeing, and traveled across the globe (China! Belgium! Italy! Chicago! Montana! Portland! Gettysburg! and oh-so-many points in-between). This blog is eclectic and random--it has poetry and cooking and books. And cats. And flowers. And the ocean (my ocean). But in that sense it's a good reflection of me and my wide-ranging, far-reaching, magpie curiosity.
