Make me smile…

written by Jana March 30, 2007

–a new set of chairs for my dining room/library table from a freecycle friend. With lower backs and a smaller footprint. They make the room look so much bigger!

–an email from this old friend today. Speaking of his surprise in having stopped by my blog and discovering my Quaker affiliation. He & his wife are Quakers now and he’s the clerk of the Saylesville Meeting–they meet in this simple 300+ year-old Meetinghouse in Rhode Island. What a *thrill* it is to know that David and I are not only friends, but Friends!

–John’s off of work today because of Spring Break. Sitting across the table from each other this morning. Each working on our laptops. Then a nummy sushi lunch together. Playing footsie under the table and nibbling off of each other’s plates.

–Discovering this article about a Chilean dancer in the “New Era” magazine. Mavi was a foreign exchange student in our previous ward. I was her YW leader and she spent many hours hanging out with our family, teaching us how to make empanadas, telling us of her dreams for dancing, and attending the Nauvoo Temple Dedication at our Stake Center together (her first dedication experience). How exciting to know that she’s achieving her dreams!

I remember approaching Mavi with my broken Spanish in the church foyer because she seemed like she needed a friend. Our family’s association with her was worth those years in class. My teacher, Senora O’Connor, would be proud!

About Me

About Me

Hi there friend, and welcome to my blog. I started writing on the internet more than fifteen years ago. Since then I've started and finished a PhD program, left the Mormon church and became a Quaker, got divorced, started a history podcast, found full-time work in academia, took up rock climbing and outrigger canoeing, and traveled across the globe (China! Belgium! Italy! Chicago! Montana! Portland! Gettysburg! and oh-so-many points in-between). For my 38th birthday and 25th anniversary of my bone cancer diagnosis, we (meaning me and you) bought legs for a young double-amputee from China. This blog is eclectic and random--it has poetry and cooking and books. And cats. And flowers. And the ocean (my ocean). But in that sense it's a good reflection of me and my wide-ranging, far-reaching, magpie curiosity.
