A beach holiday
A beach holiday
Originally uploaded by pilgrimgirlBecause the kids were off of school today, we decided it would be super fun to go to the beach. Oddly enough for a May day in SoCal, it was barely 60 degrees and the winds were more than 16mph at the beach near our home. Shortly after I took this vid it started pouring rain. At that point we decided that heading home was sounding pretty good…

going mile high
I’m headed to Denver soon and would love to meet with any of you locals. Drop a line in the comments and we’ll arrange it.
Also, if any of you can recommend Denver-area veggie cafes, coffeeshops, or must-sees–please do tell! :)

archway
For the past 2 years I’ve been training a climbing rose in my garden into an archway. I think it’s finally there, folks. Isn’t it pretty? It’s just high enough for me to walk underneath (yes, I do remain an incurable romantic, even after all these years….)
Yesterday I returned to the garden after about two weeks of convalescence. Things were looking good there due to the good care of GameBoy who kept my new plants well-watered. I fussed and fretted a bit over my roses, got my tomatoes in the ground (finally!), and pulled many weeds.
Most of my rosebushes are either blooming or are just about to bloom. My strawberries are perking up, the peach tree is covered with green fuzzy knobs, and my orange tree has some pea-sized oranges on it. I trimmed a handful of chamomile and brought it home and steeped myself a cup of tea that tasted of pure comfort.
It being Mother’s Day today, I awoke to the smell of Hollandaise sauce and a lovely breakfast of fresh strawberry shake, Eggs Florentine (with oyster mushrooms from the Farmer’s Market rather than meat), and a frothy latte. Yum!!

with the taste of blood on her lips…
See this little smidge of a kitty sitting on my hip? That’s my TobyJoy, who doesn’t even tip the scale at 5 lbs. She’s our perpetual little kitten-cat.
Today she escaped out the back door at dusk and re-entered about 5 seconds later carrying a bunny in her mouth. Of course it wasn’t just any bunny, it was the cutest little wee baby bunny ever. A perfect Toby-sized snack, I suppose. Sigh.
CatGirl squealed. I yelled for John (the master of righting-the-universe). GameBoy hid behind some bushes outside, not even wanting to know of the bunny carnage that might be ensuing in the house.
He-man John quickly separated bunny and cat, and bunny ran right under the couch where I sat. Toby was banished to the bedroom and the bunny eventually got away safely out the backdoor.
Crisis averted. But now that she’s captured one bunny, I’m afraid that it just might not be her last….

Us.
Got to experience much of this man’s good bedside manner this week as I humored him with my codeine-laced nuttiness. [Note: one way to while away the hours that one is in the ER cringing at the madness all around you, is to take lots of silly photos. When this was taken I’d just polished off a cup of tea and a fresh-baked cookie that John’d found for me somewhere in the maze of the hospital. I tell you, this man is pure magic]
People, I am home. Now I can truly heal.

Getting better, being well cared for. Be back soon, but I won’t promise any fashion shows of me in my breezy gown. :)

wishing
Wishing that I was in the garden today instead of sitting on the couch, watching the ‘rosy’ infection spreading on my leg, nauseous from the many drugs I am now taking…
A sweet friend sent this poem to me, so I share it with you…
i am a little church (no great cathedral)
far from the splendor and squalor of hurrying cities
-i do not worry if briefer days grow briefest,
i am not sorry when sun and rain make aprilmy life is the life of the reaper and the sower;
my prayers are prayers of earth’s own clumsily striving
(finding and losing and laughing and crying) children
whose any sadness or joy is my grief or my gladnessaround me surges a miracle of unceasing
birth and glory and death and resurrection:
over my sleeping self float flaming symbols
of hope, and i wake to a perfect patience of mountainsi am a little church (far from the frantic
world with its rapture and anguish) at peace with nature
-i do not worry if longer nights grow longest;
i am not sorry when silence becomes singingwinter by spring, i lift my diminutive spire to
merciful Him Whose only now is forever:
standing erect in the deathless truth of His presence
(welcoming humbly His light and proudly His darkness)~e.e.cummings

chillin’
I love the way this little cherub watches over the climbing rose in my garden (see the buds in the background? This rose is so covered with buds right now that there are hardly any leaves!).
Yesterday I overdid things a bit (can you say ‘waiting in line at the post office…on April 14th of all days!) and my leg was awfully swollen and red last night. So much so that I could hardly move.
Today, however, I’ve just been chillin’ on the couch or in my big comfy chair. I’ve run two brief and absolutely necessary errands, but the rest of this day will be spent with feet propped up on plump pillows.
I can already see that it’s making a difference–my wound is healing far more quickly now…

you know where I’ll be
It’s supposed to be 92 degrees both Saturday and Sunday. I’ll bet you can guess where I’ll be: me and this laydbug’ll be chewing on some stalks of fennel and hanging out in the garden.
Feel free to drop on by. :)
