  • A Fowl Afternoon

    .

Last week, Dora and I took CatGirl and GameBoy to hear author Eoin Colfer speak about his latest installment in the “Artemis Fowl” series. Colfer, speaking with his thick Irish brogue, captured the attention of about 75 kids for a nearly hour-long booktalk and had a booksigning line that stretched 3 blocks long (ah, but we were 3rd in line, lucky us!!).

Thanks go to Dora for remembering her camera and taking this lovely photo. :)

A photo from last week’s Huntington Beach Procession of Light. To commemorate the initiation of Ghandi’s passive resistance movement and to memorialize 9/11, a local group of religious leaders and lay people marched down HB Pier with these banners and with a peace lamp. A lovely way to spend a Sunday evening.

Note the blue headscarf of the Muslim woman carrying the reddish banner, the flowing white robes of the Methodist pastor and the yamulke of the Jewish rabbi on the right.

I took my new digital camera (thanks John!) to the garden last night. I wanted to share the loveliness of the full moon, the way it lights up flowers, fruit and vines in my garden plot. My skills are still those of a novice, but I think a few of my efforts do manage to capture the beauty of the moment.

Click on the photo above for a brief garden stroll with me. Ahhh, don’t the peaches hang like moons on the boughs of this dwarf peach tree?…

  • it’s a new picture

A new haircut and new glasses. Therefore, a new picture.
    Enjoy. :)
[Note: the new haircut was quite a production. It involved two different salons and two different hairdressers, one wrong phone number, an injury with a sharp object that resulted in a temporary disability, a 100-mile roundtrip drive in heinous LA traffic, several fish tacos, and a trip to the lego store. Pretty sure that I won’t go to such great lengths for a new ‘do again…but considering that it’d been at least six months since my last cut, I suppose the herculean effort was warranted]

This picture is from our last morning in Corolla (on the northern tip of the Outer Banks). John and E made one last quick trip to the beach to release E’s pet shrimp back into the ocean so they wouldn’t die. The sun was just rising as they walked down the beach access path.

It was hard to leave such a lovely place….

Included in this bunch are pics of C on his first backpacking trip with the Boy Scouts and his Dad, E’s class fieldtrip to the San Juan Capistrano mission (John was a parent chaperone on the trip so these lovely pictures are his handiwork), and C’s 6th grade promotion ceremony earlier this morning.

    Enjoy :)

  • you, too?

Am I the only one who dreams of peaches?

  • memory lane

It’s weird to stumble across a picture of my high school self on the Internet.

In 1988 I attended a journalism summer camp at CalPoly, sponsored by the LA Times. The photo they took of me and my cohort that year is on their website. I remember that camp well, and the little portable manual typewriter that I used in my workshop classes….

[Do you see me in the picture? Hint: I’m on the end of a row]

  • Thanks to my bro chudacek for sending this link to the pictures of our 2000 trip to England and The Isle of Man.

A church in the heart of the town of Peel, IOM, where only a few of the walls remain. Where some of my ancestors were married: (I’m the blur in the middle of the pic wearing a grey raincoat). They’ve taken the headstones from the church cemetray and paved the park with them. Lovely, but a bit irreverent-feeling to be walking all over the headstones, IMO.

A steam train. The IOM is a haven of antique trains. On this teeny island you can ride this steam train to all the major cities. There is also a quaint electric train running the length of the island. The e-train has open air cars and is reminiscent of the streetcar in Mister Rogers show. There’s also a horse-drawn tram available for those who like their tracks to run slow…
