wide open when I know clearly…

Was so hungry for poetry today, that I ate two books of it for lunch (along with some very tasty steak that was just barely pink in the middle and so-juicy and a strong cup of coffee).

If they come in the night

    by Marge Piercy

Long ago on a night of danger and vigil
a friend said, Why are you happy?
    He explained (we lay together
on a hard cold floor) what prison
    meant because he had done
time, and I talked of the death
of friends. Why are you happy
    then
    , he asked, close to
    angry.

I said, I like my life. If I
have to give it back, if they
take it from me, let me only
not feel I wasted any, let me
not feel I forgot to love anyone
I meant to love, that I forgot
to give what I held in my hands,
that I forgot to do some little
piece of the work that wanted
    to come through.

    Sun and moonshine, starshine,
the muted grey light off the waters of the bay at night, the white
light of the fog stealing in,
the first spears of the morning
    touching a face
    I love. We all lose
    everything. We lose
    ourselves. We are lost.

Only what we manage to do
    lasts, what love sculps from us;
but what I count, my rubies, my
    children, are those moments
wide open when I know clearly
who I am, who you are, what we
do, a marigold, an oakleaf, a meteor,
with all my senses hungry and filled
at once like a pitcher with light.

  • how to charm me…

    how to charm me…

Tidy all of the dark and scary corners of my garden so they become less attractive to the local rodent population, and even set up a table with a potting area for me to work on re-planting my herbs and flowers.

    :)

Note: this morning, in full daylight, I happened upon a long-tailed beastie in my garden.  I didn’t scream or throw a fit.  I was just fine.  Methinks my new nickname is “Jana-Beatrix-Potter Remy”…

  • Dear Universe…

    Dear Universe…

This letter to the Universe from Maddie got me thinking about what I would ask for right now if I were to write such a letter.  At the same time, I reflected recently on my 2011 wishlist, realizing again how uncannily ‘right on’ I was as I predicted so many of the year’s happenings…

So rather than write a request to the Universe, it seems more apropos to mark how many wonderful things have recently come my way:

    • a new-to-me Russian man-kitty who is softer-than-soft & purrs up a storm when he’s happy
    • a new-to-me small house(!) with rosebushes just starting to bloom and a view from my bedroom window that looks just like the one I remember from St. Remy-de-Provence & morning light that makes the prettiest pictures
    • learning to cook with new spices and textures (and meat!) & herbs from my garden
    • friends (new & old) who seem eager for adventure and to share my home
    • the ocean, nearly everyday
    • a few new little-black-dresses and so many places to wear them
    • continuing to greet each morning sitting in the sunshine on my soft living room rug
    • travels, near and far–all summer long
    • sharing my love of WordPress with friends and faculty–and gathering many new converts
    • learning something new, every single day

  • I am too long away from water…

I am too long away from water…

I didn’t see an ocean until I was 14 years old.  I didn’t take a dip in the ocean until I was 35.  And I didn’t begin to learn its currents until three years ago.  But now….I can hardly go more than a few days without connecting with the ocean again–I am literally hungry for it.  Like this weekend, when I felt such a restlessness until I was out bobbing in the surf (again).

I’m beginning to wonder what will happen when I eventually move from this place. I know I won’t live in SoCal forever–so will I find some other love to replace that of the sea?

    Exiled (an excerpt)

Searching my heart for its true sorrow,
This is the thing I find to be:
That I am weary of words and people,
    Sick on the city, wanting the sea;

    Wanting the sticky, salty sweetness
    Of the strong wind and shattered spray;
Wanting the loud sound and the soft sound
Of the big surf that breaks all day…

If I could see the weedy museels
Crusting the wrecked and rotting hulls,
Hear once again the hungry crying
    Overhead, of the wheeling gulls…

I should be happy, that am happy
Never at all since I came here
I am too long away from water.
I have a need of water near.

  • night sky…

    night sky…

Having worked so hard for the past few weeks, I needed a bit of a breather this weekend.  So it just seemed natural to throw the tent and camping gear into the car and set out for the coast, hoping to find a spot to sleep somewhere within walking distance of a beach…

A few hours later as I sat in wet sand at the edge of crashing waves underneath the night sky, I simply couldn’t have been happier.  It was just what I needed (that, and the hours spent swimming along in the shoreline in the sunshine the next morning, were simply sublime)

I tried to take a bit of film to share here, but I suspect that it looks more foreboding than peaceful.  But perhaps you might enjoy joining me nonetheless…(and don’t you love the sound of those crashing waves?)

A girl could get very addicted to her vintage-video iPhone app, methinks. (oh, and what fun I’m having with my brand-new phone–no more crashed OS, wonky apps, failed text messages, etc!)

For your enjoyment: a “historic” view of Chapman University after Orientation. As seen from the rooftop of Memorial Hall (and I have I mentioned lately, just how much I love my penthouse office space with roof access?)…

  • short shameful confession #14

    short shameful confession #14

Back when I was in high school and had limited mobility due to having recently lost my leg (to cancer), my boyfriends often carried me wherever we were going. It got me there faster than if I were to ambulate myself, and also fed my uber-romantic teen desires to be swept off of my feet by a beau (I will confess that such moments fueled many a Twilight-like fantasy).

But now it’s been years–if not decades–since I’ve gotten a ‘lift’ from anyone (the one exception might be that time a few months ago that a wave was pulling me away from my canoe and a teammate picked me up and carried me to safer waters). I’m rather proud of my ability to get places on my own two feet, so I tend to look back on my years of being ‘carried’ by men as a bit shameful now…

However, a few days ago I got a piggyback ride up the stairs to the second story of my house…and I enjoyed it far more than I imagined that I would. What a sweet feeling it was to trust myself to someone else’s strength for a few moments…

  • alone…

    alone…

There was a time in my life when the “Footprints” poem resonated with me fairly deeply.  It was back in the day when I was going through cancer treatments and faced some pretty lonely moments–those times when there was no one who could step in and take my pain away, or make things any better.  The thought that God/Jesus was with me then was quite comforting.  I wasn’t ready to think that I was on my own in this big (and scary and painful) world:

    “You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”

Certainly that’s why I found the following tweet so amusing (as did many of my twitter and Facebook followers who re-tweeted and “liked” my post)…

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be alone, and about how much I’ve been craving autonomy for the past several years.  In my marriage I was kept rather close by my spouse, which I struggled with.  In reaction, I developed a habit of ‘accidentally’ turning off my cellphone or letting the battery run down so I could be free from monitoring (I wanted to be out of contact).  Not that I was doing anything wrong, but I chafed at the feeling of surveillance and wanted to be where no one knew me and no one knew where I was.  It was certainly a reaction to mothering for so many years–always being accompanied by children (and/or spouse).  And it’s just one more reason that I began to enjoy traveling so much.  When I was in a different time zone and far away from the familiar, I had even more autonomy.

This past year I’ve had so many delicious hours of being alone.  Certainly there’ve been moments where being with someone meant everything to me and was perfect for the moment (and, oh, I’ve had me some fantastic adventures with new friends and romantic partners–what a time of life to be single & exploring every new possibility!)…But, for the first time, I’m feeling the power that comes from making my own choices and standing alone in life’s circumstances.  I’m making some mistakes along the way, learning lots, and making progress–one step at a time.  What a great feeling.
